Parks after Dark: program for all ages and interests at Loma Alta Park, 6-9 PM every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday thru Aug. 24.

Saturday, Aug. 3

Angeles Crest 100 MIle Endurance Run starts in Wrightwood. The foot race starts at 5 AM Saturday morning and traverses the San Gabriel Mountains for a total distance of 100.5 miles and over 21,000' of climbing Look for the winner to arrive at the finish line, at Loma Alta Park, sometime after 10 PM, but most finishers will start arriving early Sunday morning.  You can track your favorites via the website at  http://www.ac100.com/ 

Holden open house:  41st District Assemblyman Chris Holden invites the community to a block party and resource fair on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 11 AM-3 PM.  The event is an effort to distribute information about state and local programs and services available to residents of the district.  The fair includes rides, entertainment, a car show, and state and federal government informational displays.  Pasadena Fire Fighters will be cooking up free hot dogs.  The location is the 500 block of Jackson Street in Pasadena.  Parking will be located on El Molino, Los Robles, and the open secitons of Madison and Oakland Avenue. 

Parks After Dark continues at Loma Alta Park, 6-9 PM.

Farnsworth Park Summer Concert is the Latin jazz of Altadena guitarist Brian Hughes.  Concert starts at 7 PM, and is free, at the Farnsworth Park Amphitheater, Lake & Mt. Curve Avenues.  Presented by the Sheriff's Support Group of Altadena.

Brains meet Bard: Caltech Players' "The Tempest" opens Friday

The Caltech Players present William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” over the first two weekends of August, in the gardens behind Caltech’s 1919-era Alumni House in Pasadena.

 

Shakespeare’s final play, “The Tempest” mixes magic, music, dance, and some of the Bard’s most sublime poetry.  It tells the story of the wizard Prospero and his daughter Miranda, living on an enchanted island with the spirit Ariel and the beast-creature Caliban.  When a shipwreck strands a company of courtiers, fools, and villains on the island, even the great wits and sorcery of Prospero get confused in the resulting tangle of romance, mischief, and murder.

Director Kathryn Bikle, whose “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” last summer at Caltech garnered much praise, is an Altadena resident with a master’s degree in directing, and her local theater work includes productions with Pasadena’s Basement Theatre and Arroyo Repertory Theater.  The “tricksy spirits” of the island owe their movement to choreographer Peggy Burt, of Lineage Dance of Pasadena, and the fantastical clothing of the human and otherworldly creatures is designed by Ann K Lindsey, who created costumes for “Little Match Girl Ballet” at Burbank’s Colony Theater.  The original music is penned by Yulan Lin (who has performed with the LA Opera and the Master Chorale) and Gemma Mason (who arranges music for the local singing group “Out of Context”).

The Caltech Players, who presented a very successful “Little Shop of Horrors” earlier this year, bring together Caltech students, staff and faculty, JPLers, and talented members of the Pasadena community to share and create vibrant theater.  The cast of “The Tempest” is equally varied;  Todd Brun (Prospero) is a Caltech alumnus, Zachary Abbott (King Alonso) a staff member, Kelvin Bates (Ferdinand) a grad student, and Ashley Stroupe (Trinculo) a Mars Rover driver for JPL.

Performance dates are August 2, 3, 4, and August 8. 9, and 10, all performances starting at 7:30 pm.  Tickets will be sold at the door, and can be reserved at http://explicit.caltech.edu/;  $10 general admission, $5 students; appropriate for ages 12 and up.  Performances are in the gardens behind Caltech’s historic Alumni House, located at 345 S. August at Altadena Community Church: singing, eating, and Jesus' grandmothers

Unleash your inner singer with ACC's informal summer choir, any Sunday in August.  All are welcome.  The choir meets at 8:45 a.m. to prepare a simple anthem for that day.  Dress is casual—no matching required.  Choir director Wendy Caldwell helps singers sound good!  ACC is at 943 E. Altadena Drive, just east of the Chevron station.

Sunday worship begins at 10 AM.  On Aug. 4, Pastor Joe McGowan will preach from Amos 2:4-16, an invitation to a different kind of refueling.  Summer nutrition is the topic for the 11:30 AM adult class, led by a registered dietician, and childcare and Sunday school are available. 

On Saturday, Aug. 10, 9:30 AM-2 PM, women are invited to join the ACC women's retreat, "What Jesus' Grandmothers Say About Him," led by the Rev. Barbara Anderson.  Anderson is a writer and Presbyterian minister with degrees from Harvard Divinity School and McCormick Theological School in Chicago.  Come for Bible study, conversation, joy, and challenge in exploring why four women are included in Jesus' genealogy, an honor usually reserved for men.  These grandmothers of Jesus were foreigners, outsiders, and non-traditional members of society who put everything on the line for faithfulness to God.   The cost is $10, with snacks and lunch provided. Call the church office at (626) 798-1185 (weekday mornings) if you have questions or to RSVP.

Junior League recruiting new members

The Junior League of Pasadena, Inc. (JLP) will hold the first of three Prospective Member Open Houses on Saturday, August 3, 2013 from 2-4 PM. at the League’s headquarters. Ladies from the Pasadena area and beyond, interested in learning more about the League’s over 85 years of leadership and service in the community are welcome to attend.

Prospective members will learn about the League's mission: to develop the potential of women, improve communities and promote voluntarism, have the opportunity to meet with current members about the League’s exciting service projects and learn why we were named as one of Pasadena’s “50 Inspiring Charities” by THE Magazine in 2011. 

“The Junior League of Pasadena gives women an opportunity through mission centered volunteer efforts to make immediate impact to better the community while carrying on the 87 year legacy of our League,” stated Allison Daniels, JLP 2013 Provisional Committee Chair. “Each new member is empowered to share her skills with her fellow members and our community partners, while engaging in unique opportunities that are sure to train and teach new skills.  This exciting first year is crowned by the “Kids in the Kitchen” signature project, which aims to empower and educate youth about healthy lifestyle choices, nutrition and physical fitness to help reverse the growing trend of childhood obesity and its associated health issues.” 

In addition to a hands-on experience in contributing to community causes, League members receive training in leadership and advocacy skills, management, marketing and communication skills. The Junior League of Pasadena encourages all women who are interested in joining to attend the open houses to learn more about becoming a part of its community.                

The Prospective Member Open House dates are:

Saturday, August 3, 2013 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.
Saturday, August 17, 2013 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.  
Wednesday, September 11, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

"Yappy Hour" at El Cholo benefits Pasadena Humane Society

The Pasadena Animal League is holding another "Yappy Hour" fundaiser, with a portion of proceeds going to the Pasadena Humane Society.

This month's occasion will be on Wed., Aug. 7, from 5-8 PM at El Cholo Café, 260 E. Colorado Boulevard at the Paseo Colorado.

El Cholo will donate 10 percent of all sales to the Humane Society.
