Crime Log: Jan 20 -25, 2009

Not much this round, but what there is is intense:

Jan. 20: 2200 block of Midwick Dr., male adults entered the location and stole numerous items while the residents were home.

Jan. 25: Lake Ave. and Altadena Drive, man arrested for possession of cocaine base.

Jan. 25: Crosby St. and Lincoln Ave., man arrested for driving a stolen vehicle.

Belated happy new year from the Crime Log:

Jan. 2: Man arrested for possession of cocaine base as Casitas Ave. and Mountain St.; male and female adults were assaulted with firearms at 2790 Tola Ave. (possibly a gang crime); and two men and a woman were assaulted with a firearm in another possible gang crime at 710 W. Loma Alta Drive.

Jan. 4: Man arrested for domestic violence at 2868 N. Lincoln Ave.

Jan. 9: A woman arrested for domestic violence at 1354 N. Grand Oaks Ave; and a male juvenile was arrested for a 2008 robbery that occurred at 2331 N. Lincoln.

Jan. 10: A man arrested at Loma Alta Dr. and Monterosa Dr. for taking a vehicle without the owner's consent and possession of burglary tools; a man was arrested at Lincoln Ave. and Woodbury Rd. for possession of marijuana for sale.  Meanwhile, on El Sereno that day: a shooting was reported at an inhabited dwelling on the 2200 block of El Sereno (suspects unknown, possibly gang-related); and a man was arrested at 2267 El Sereno for being a fugitive from justice.

Jan. 14: Man arrested for possession for sale of cocaine base at 2260 N. Lincoln,

Jan. 16: 710 W. Loma Alta Dr., a man arrested for assault with a deadly weapons for one of the Jan. 2 shootings.

Jan 18: Man arrested fro commercial burglary at 2615 N. Fair Oaks Ave.

Jan. 19: Mariposa St. and Fair Oaks Ave., man arrested for receiving stolen property.

Crime log: Dec. 8-27, 2008

Lots of thefts this round of the Crime Log:

Dec. 8: 2916 N. Emerson Way, two adult males arrested for residential burglary.

Dec. 18:  Man forcibly steals items from victim on 2615 N. Fair Oaks Ave.

Dec. 18:  Several perps use a simulated handgun to steal several thousand real dollars from a victim at 1521 N. Allen Ave.

Dec. 19: A laptop computer is stolen from an unlocked car at 962 Wapello St.

Dec. 25: 2408 Lincoln Ave., adult male arrested for vandalizing the wall of a business (Merry Christmas!)

Dec. 27: 233 E. Calavaras St., man arrested for possession of narcotics for sale and assaulting a peace officer.

Dec. 27: 350 W. Mountain View St., man assaulted another man with a crowbar.

Nov. 21: Glenrose Ave. and Acadia St., man arrested for possession of dangerous weapon and marijuana for sale.

Nov. 24: 500 block of Vermont St., woman arrested for possession of cocaine base for sales.

Nov. 2: Woman assaulted a victim with a display rack on the 900 block of E. Altadena Drive.

Nov. 3: 2400 N. Tanoble St., victim had truck containing landscaping equipment stolen at gunpoint.

Nov. 4: Lincoln Ave. and Toolen Ave., a woman was arrested for possession of account information with the intent to commit identity theft.

Aug. 23: Male Hispanic adult was arrested for possession of a dangerous weapon on the corner of Lincoln Ave. and Archwood Pl.

Aug. 24: An inert grenade was found on the 1500 block of N. Roosevelt Ave.

Aug. 24: A black male adult was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend at Santa Anita Ave. and Coleman St.

Aug. 25: A black male adult was arrested for possession of cocaine base on the corner of Mariposa St. and El Molino Ave.

Aug. 26: An adult black male was accused of sexual battery on a black female juvenile on W. Harriet St.

Mail thieves at work

Have a few minutes in the middle of packing for vacation, and need to catch up ...

Carolyn Seitz recently sent this "all hands" letter, which we share with you:

I learned from friends this evening that there is an adult male and two young men somewhere between late teens and early 20's in a newer Ford Escape, stealing mail from mailboxes.  They are Caucasian and all have shaved heads.

This morning, one of my friends was out for what she thought would be a quick walk to let her 3 dogs do what dogs need to do at 6:30 am.

She was on Sierra Madre Boulevard in Sierra Madre when she saw the 2 young men quickly opening mailboxes, especially where the boxes are unsecured gang boxes.   In some areas of Altadena, there are rows of mailboxes all clustered.

When these three men realized they'd been seen, the adult, sitting in the passenger seat of the car quickly but calmly called out to the two younger men to hurry up and put the mail in the boxes, as if they were just leaving outgoing mail.

My friend, at first out for a quick run out with the dogs, in her plaid PJ bottoms and white t-shirt, ended up running to the Sierra Madre Police Department.  On the way there she saw these same guys again, still emptying mailboxes and when they saw her, they made a u-turn and started to drive away.

She ran to the police station, gave them a report and by the time she was running back with the dogs, the SMPD was on the scene where she told them they'd find the majority of mailboxes open. 

She was also able to give them the license number for the car, except for the first digit.

If you don't have a locking mailbox, get one, or have your mail sent to a post office box.  Don't leave outgoing mail in an unsecured mailbox.  Don't be an easy target for identity theft.
