Pay attention to signs of dehydration which include dizziness, fatigue, faintness, headaches, muscle cramps, and increased thirst. Individuals with these symptoms should be moved to a cooler, shaded place, and given water or sport drinks.

Former Assemblyman Anthony Portantino has only been home from Sacramento for six months, but the La Cañada Flintridge resident is already gearing up for his next shot at office — the State Senate seat in the 25th district.
That seat, currently held by Carol Liu (D-La Cañada Flintridge), will open up in 2016 when Liu must leave office due to term limits. The 25th district, established during last year's redistricting, includes Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena and La Cañada.
Portantino, a Democrat, said Friday that he is getting back into politics because people in his district want him to keep pushing for transparency in government and funding for education.

It's summer, and time for camps of all kinds. Altadena Stables at 3064 Ridgeview Drive runs a summer camp for young riders. Karin Bugge (the Altadenahiker), a horsewoman herself, shared this picture of the camp in progress.
"If you wonder about my interest in Altadena Stables, it’s one of the few vibrant public stables still left in the San Gabriel Valley," she writes. "When we lose a stable, another doesn’t step in to take its place. And for those who are horse lovers or owners like myself, we want to keep this lovely bit of rural Altadena alive and thriving."

The Altadena Sheriff's Station is looking for two men who may be involved in a still-mysterious shooting.
According to a press release, deputies responded to a call near the 400 block of Stonehurst Drive on Tuesday, June 22, at 11:25 PM. Witnesses said that two males were observed running from the area. Deputies recovered 9 mm bullet casings and observed blood splatter, but no victims were located.
The runners were both described as male African Americans., 18-22 years of age, and about 5 ft. 7 inches - 5 ft. 10 inches tall. one was wearing a black t-shirt, white basketball shorts, and black shoes. The other was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, black t-shirt, white or beige shorts and white shoes.

Pasadena police arrested three juveniles in a case where a car stolen in Altadena was went on a hit-and-run spree, followed by a police pursuit.
The vehicle -- a blue Pontiac -- was reported in three hit-and-run collisions during the course of the day. Police received a call on the final collision at about 3:55 PM, on the 800 block of Sunset Avenue.
According to a press release, officers attempted to stop the vehicle in the area of Pasadena Avenue and Walnut street, but it drove away, triggering a pursuit that took place at "slow to moderate speeds" on city streets. With support from a helicopter, the pursuit ended in the area of Pepper Drive and Sunset Avenue. According to the press release, the driver and two passengers fled the vehicle, but were were apprehended.

The Pasadena Waldorf School faculty, staff, students and community, honored the outgoing Eighth Grade Class of 2013 with the traditional Rose Ceremony. With tribute in song from each of the lower grades, culminating in a rose exchange from First Grade “buddies” who had been mentored by the Eighth Grade students, the students in the school were able to say good-bye to the exiting class while also wishing them a successful new beginning in high school. Later that evening, the Eighth Grade class enjoyed a meaningful and emotional graduation ceremony and party. Pasadena Waldorf School congratulates the Class of 2013.

The Pasadena Half-Marathon takes place tomorrow, June 29. While it doesn't venture into Altadena, there will be street closures and detours that may affect your trip into Pasadena.

Wednesday, June 19
Between 12:00 AM and 9:00 AM – A vehicle vandalism occurred in the 1300 block of Terra Alta Avenue. Pasadena. The vehicle’s paint was intentionally scratched (“keyed”).
2:30 PM – Suspect Aubrey Franklin (male/24 years old/Altadena) was arrested in the 2200 block of Casitas Avenue for felon in possession of a firearm and parole violation after detectives conducted a parole check of his residence.
Thursday, June 20
Between 12:00 AM and 1:00 AM – A petty theft occurred at Brake Masters, 2095 N. Lake Avenue. Loss: (1) gallon of gas.
10:00 AM – A petty theft occurred in the 800 block of E. Sacramento Street. Loss: metal gate, sliding door, window screens.
12:00 PM – Altadena detectives authored a search warrant and subsequently arrested Suspect Flanigan Walker (male/31 years old/Los Angeles) for burglary and Identity theft after property stolen in a local burglary was linked to him.
9:55 PM – Suspect Eduardo Garcia (male/37 years old) was arrested at Crosby/Olive Ave. for being under the influence of drugs. Deputies contacted him after observing him walking in the middle of the street westbound on Crosby St.

The Altadena Sheriff's Station reminds all residents and visitors that the best way to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday with family and friends is by attending professional fireworks shows such as Americafest at the Pasadena Rose Bowl Stadium.
The sale or possession of all fireworks is illegal in Altadena. Violators are subject to confiscation and impound of vehicles; up to one year in jail and fines up to $50,000. Call Altadena Sheriff's at (626) 798-1131 to report illegal fireworks.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department wants to remind everyone that the use of fireworks not only causes fires, but results in severe injuries and burns.
Altadena Sheriff's Captain John Benedict urges everyone to make safety a priority onJuly 4th.
Even sparklers, which many people consider safe, can reach 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, causing serious burns and starting fires. Adults normally don’t allow their children to get near anything that hot, but for some reason they think it’s acceptable to put sparklers in the hands of little ones on the Fourth of July.
Statistics show fireworks are among the most risky of consumer products. Nearly 10,000 fireworks-related injuries are treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms every year and two of five people injured by fireworks are under 15 years old. The most current statistics from the National Fire Protection Association show that in 2009 more than nine out of 10, or 92 percent, of all fireworks-related injuries treated in hospitals were caused by fireworks that are allowed for consumer use by federal or state regulations.
NOTE TO PARENTS: If your child has any fireworks prior to June 28th, the items are probably illegal and dangerous and should be
turned over to your fire department or local police agency!
Parents are liable for any damage or injuries caused by their children using fireworks.

We are excited to announce the formation of the Southern California Children’s Museum (SCCM) and our kick-off event on Thursday, July 11, 2013 from 5 to 8 PM at the Arroyo Seco Miniature Golf Course in South Pasadena. The SCCM will be located in the San Gabriel Valley and fill an important void in early childhood educational experiences.
Founded by Pasadena-area moms, SCCM will be located in the San Gabriel Valley and will have an emphasis on the local arts and culture found in our Southern California region. The museum will be primarily designed for children under the age of eight. Exhibits and activities will be play-based and focused on developing a child's gross and fine motor skills, while incorporating dramatic play elements. Our goal is to bring an environment focused on early childhood education to our newest generation while offering them a place to create lifelong memories.
Guests at the July 11 celebration will learn about the museum’s current happenings, enjoy refreshments and participate in a fabulous golf raffle. Kids are welcome to attend. With hot weather on the horizon through the weekend, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health will open cooling centers throughout Los Angeles County to provide relief from the heat for the elderly and others who face heat-related health difficulties and stress, according to a press release from Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.
Local cooling centers are: the Altadena Senior Center, 560 E. Mariposa St., Monday-Friday, 8 AM-5 PM; and the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 W. Holly Street, Monday-Friday 8:30 AM-4:30 PM, Saturday 8:30 AM-3 PM.
Public health officials have also given some advice for getting through the hot weather:

The Altadena Mountain Rescue Team, along with search and rescue teams from Sierra Madre and Montrose, rescued two hikers on Tuesday, June 25, in a complex technical rescue that lasted until the early morning hours.
According to a release from the Altadena Sheriff Station, members of the Altadena team were called out to a rescue in Eaton Canyon at about 6:36 PM. Two hikers, trying to find a waterfall, wandered off the trail at Acrophobia Ridge toward Power Line Trail. The release said that family members of the hikers contacted the Downey police department when the hikers did not return home, and Downyey notified the Sheriff's Department.
Montrose and Sierra Madre teams were called to assist at about 8:20 PM, according to the release, "as the position of the hikers was extremely precarious and dangerous. The expertise of all three teams was needed to handle the sophisticated operation that used harnesses to pull the hikers off the ridge and to safety. The operation ended in the early morning hours. There were no reported injuries. "

Foothill Municipal Water District (FMWD) will continue to provide rebates for high efficiency toilets, turf removal and rain barrels beginning with the new fiscal year, July 1, 2013, announced Nina Jazmadarian, General Manager of FMWD.
During the previous fiscal year that ended June 30, 2013, $30,041 in rebates were provided to local residents to support the effort to be more independent of imported water supplies.
The following rebates are being offered to customers within the service area.
Residential High Efficiency Toilets - customers that replace older high-water use toilets with high-efficiency toilets can receive a $50 rebate. Only Water-Sense qualified high-efficiency toilets with a capacity of 1.28 gallons per flush or less qualify for rebates. (Check with your water provider for additional rebate dollars on selected items).
Turf Removal Program- Foothill area residents can receive up to $800 in rebates for removing their thirsty lawns and replacing with California Friendly plants, drought tolerant plants, mulch, or pervious hardscape.
Rain Barrels - customers can receive a rebate of up to 50% of the cost of a rain barrel up to $100, for a maximum of 8 rain barrels by capturing stormwater and using it to irrigate landscape.Please visit the FMWD website at www.fmwd.com/conservation.aspx for information on how to apply for rebates.
In addition to the above rebates, residential customers can receive the following rebates through Metropolitan Water District of Southern California at http://socalwatersmart.com.
High Efficiency Clothes Washers - a rebate of up to $85 for one washer is being offered. Washers must have a water factor of 4.0 or less.
Weather-based Irrigation Controller- a rebate of $80 for less than 1 acre and $25 per station for more than 1 acre of irrigation is being offered.
Rotating Sprinkler Nozzles - Pop-up spray head nozzles can be replaced with these low-precipitation rate nozzles to help reduce run-off and irrigate more efficiently. The rebate for nozzles is $4 per nozzle with a minimum of 15 per application.
Foothill area commercial and industrial customers can receive rebates on water conservation devices as well. As a member agency of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, Foothill's customers are eligible for the Save-a-Buck Program which is now operating under the SoCalWaterSmart Program. Foothill Municipal Water District provides imported water to Crescenta Valley Water District, La Canada Irrigation District, Mesa Crest Water Company, Valley Water Company, Lincoln Avenue Water Company, Las Flores Water Company and Rubio Canon Land & Water Association. Kinneloa Irrigation District, another retail agency, takes no water from Foothill.

The detection of Aedes aegypti (the yellow fever mosquito) in Fresno and Madera counties this month is complicating mosquito control efforts and makes public cooperation a critical component to eradicating the yellow fever mosquito. This mosquito is not native to California and is an efficient carrier of diseases such as dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya. Aedes aegypti is a small, dark mosquito with white markings and banded legs. It may be active around dusk but bites most often during the day and readily enters homes for shelter and to bite people.
These new vector challenges to public health in California coincide with a national effort to raise awareness about mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit. The American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) has declared this week as National Mosquito Control Awareness Week. Since 1935, the AMCA, an international organization of nearly 2,000 public health professionals, has been dedicated to preserving the public's health and well-being through safe and environmentally sound mosquito control programs.

Dog found wandering around Berkshire and Oak Grove playing in traffic, poor guy. Initially shy but relaxed and fell asleep as soon as he got inside of car.

This week's Altadena Farmers' Market will have a little something for fans of Polynesian dance and Nocino.
"Nocino" is not something said by a flirtatious Italian bella. Market manager Joseph Shuldiner says: "Nocino is a traditional Italian walnut liqueur, made when the nuts, still green on the tree, are picked unripe. The harvest is traditionally picked on San Giovanni Day, June 24 (Saint John the Baptist Day), in the morning by barefoot pickers. To actually make Nocino, green (un-ripe) walnuts are steeped in neutral spirits (Vodka or Everclear) with spices for 60 days and then imbibed toward the end of fall."
If this sounds intriguing, the market will have a fresh (but limited) harvest of green English walnuts from the Institute of Domestic Technology farms this Wednesday, June 26. "With each purchase, buyers will receive a recipe sheet with easy, step-by-step instructions on making Nocino at home, along with a Nocino cocktail recipe for when their batch of inky black walnut liqueur is ready to taste."

The Altadena Sheriff's Station is holding another “Coffee with the Captain” event on Tuesday, July 2 Monday, July 8 from 5-6:30 PM at Café Culture, 1359 N. Altadena Drive (near the corner with E. Washington Boulevard).
Altadena Sheriff's Station Captain John Benedict and his staff will be available to meet and answer questions. According to a statement from the sheriff's station, "Captain Benedict has enjoyed meeting members of the community at these events. He finds these events an excellent opportunity to continue building on existing partnerships with the community and is very interested in hearing any questions or concerns anyone may have. These events help Captain Benedict and the Altadena Sheriff's Station in identifying and prioritizing issues occurring in the community."

Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich announced that county Animal Care and Control may receive up to $3.1 million boost to its budget, including capital expenditures to protect the public from dangerous dogs.
In a statement from Antonovich's office, $775,000 has been approved for additional staffing and equipment in the final recommended budget, and $2.4 million set aside for adoption in the supplemental budget.
What this means in concrete terms is that five additional officers will be deployed on July 1, and nine new positions will be added to the Critical Case Processing Unit team, which investigates dangerous dog cases. Three officers will be added to the Major Cases Unit, which investigates animal cruelty, neglect, hoarding, and illegal animal fighting.
The monies will also go to a new communications center in the Antelope Valley, new vehicles, and protective equipment.
“With additional staffing and resources, the County’s animal control officers will have the tools necessary to patrol our neighborhoods and hold irresponsible owners accountable when they allow their dogs to roam, fight, breed and attack other pets and people,” Antonovich said.

The Central Altadena Little League (CALL) will host the 9-10 All Stars of District 17 in their annual tournament at Farnsworth Park. All-star teams from around the district will play each other in tournament rounds daily from Friday, June 28 through Sunday, July 7 (and July 8 if necessary). There wil be no games July 4.

In 2010, she spoke elequently from her wheelchair at a meeting in the Altadena Public Library about improving access to the disabled. Today, she has lost use of her arms and can no longer speak. Walker speaks via a communication board, lighting up words, letters, and phrases with a laser pointer attached to her glasses.
Her constant companion for the past three years has been Shadow, her Shih Tzu, who often rode on her lap as they went through the day.
That ended Thursday, June 20, when two loose dogs killed her friend.
Walker, Shadow, and a caretaker usually go for a walk in the early evening. Walker said, “Most of the time we go together, but I did not feel good, so I just said I will not go today.”
According to Walker’s husband Alan, the caretaker took the dog on its leash along their usual route up St. James Place, where they live She hadn’t gotten far when they were confronted by two dogs, a pitbull and Rottweiler, who had escaped from their yard. According to Alan Walker, the dogs belonged to a young man who lived just up the street.
Alan Walker said that Shadow was killed immediately and one of the dogs tore the caretaker’s pantleg as she fled screaming.

The National Forest Service has extended the closure of the Station Fire Recovery Area for another year.
According to an order signed May 24 by Angeles National Forest supervisor Thomas A. Contreras, the service prohibits being in the Station Fire Recovery Area or any roads or trails within it, except for the Hidden Springs Day Use Area and Monte Cristo Campground.
What this means locally is that popular hiking and camping areas around Millard Canyon, Mt. Lowe, and Gould Mesa remain off-limits for at least another year.

The sure sign of summer in Altadena (besides some oppressively hot days) is the Sheriff Support Group's annual concert series at the Farnsworth Park amphitheatre.
Returning for the 1th year, the Saturday night event promises to be bigger and better than ever.
Producer Robert Klomburg said that the Rotary Club of Altadena will again be selling beer and wine and El Patron Mexican Food Restaurant will once again be serving Mexican food on site.
Returning favorites include openers the Downbeat Express with Jennifer Gates; Altadena's own Brian Hughes and Those Manning Bhoys; and crowd favorites Upstream, returning for their fourth appearance. The Blue Breeze Band is also returning for their second appearance. New to the mix are Altadena jazzman Louis Van Taylor and his quintet, and rockers Law & Disorder and The Groove.
The grand finale is the return of Hot August Night, Dean Colley's Neil Diamond tribute to wrap up the summer. All concerts are on Saturday starting at 7 PM.

On Saturday, June 29, at 7:30 PM, in the chapel of Lake Ave. Church, 393 N. Lake Ave., the Pasadena Summer Youth Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Paul Sherman will present its annual Young Artist's Concert.
Performing with PSYCO this year will be Eva Polgar, pianist and winner of the Liszt piano competition. Also on the program is 10 old Vera Hong violinist, 15 year old violist Daniel Hsiao, and cellist Justin Cheung, 14. On Friday, June 28, Senator Carol Liu will host a public forum titled “Insurance in an Era of Climate Change” with keynote speaker Dave Jones, California Insurance Commissioner.
As climate change has been fueling the frequency of wildfires and other unusual events, the Union of Concerned Scientists will present expert panelists to discuss the latest climate information, its impact on California homeowners insurance in high-risk areas, and how insurers, policymakers, and consumers can work together to identify the best methods to strengthen our resilience to the impacts of climate change.
“Wildfires cost California hundreds of millions of dollars each year in firefighting efforts and property damage,” said Adrienne Alvord, UCS California and Western States director. “With climate change fueling the frequency of wildfires, Californians who live in high-risk areas are facing an additional threat to the availability and affordability of their homeowners insurance.”
This forum will examine how current climate change information is affecting the insurance industry, and provide a clearer picture as to what Southern California residents can expect in years ahead.

These young men have worked harder than they’ve ever worked before, And as one member who will attend UC Irvine quietly stated, “It was all worth it,” looking down at his collection of medallions and sashes. The John Muir High school graduation ceremony took place on Friday June 7, at 1 PM at the Pasadena Civic Center. The graduating class all wore ear-to-ear smiles as they celebrated the ending of one incredible journey and embraced the beginning a new one.

The 2013 East Altadena Little League AAA Red Sox Team and families wanted to try something new this season. They decided to foster the spirit of giving, in a team environment, alongside the spirit of competition that East Altadena Little League prides itself on.
The results were tremendous. The team raised $670 through their hard work, great play, and dedication. The families passed around a “Run Dollar” can and money was donated per run scored. Early in the season, $60 dollars was sent to help the cause during Boston’s Marathon crisis.
As the season came to a close the AAA Red Sox were knocked out of the playoffs by a single run. This tenacious team rallied one last time, only this time it was off the field during a recent June 8 meeting at The Pasadena Humane Society, as they proudly handed over a check made out to The Pasadena Humane Society in the amount of $305. The EALL AAA Red Sox left that day feeling like winners by helping the displaced animals that need the care provided by our great Humane Society.
The players still have one more check to deliverL another $305 to help feed the homeless through the organization PATH-(People Assisting The Homeless). Looks like the EALL AAA Red Sox will be taking home another win this season!

Rescue crews walked down an injured hiker from second waterfall at Eaton Canyon Thursday afternoon.
According to Law Enforcement Technician Valdez at the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station, rescue crews were called in about 2:40 PM after the male hiker, no age available, had twisted his ankle at the location, which has been notorious for hiker injuries and deaths in recent years.
The hiker was taken down from the waterfall and transported to Huntington Hospital in Pasadena.

Amie Moore at Amy's Patio Café says that they're inaugurating "Burger Thursday" tonight. The restaurant is going to do different kinds of burgers every Thursday night from 5-9 PM.
This is just one of the changes at the restauarant, as Moore says they're no longer going to close between breakfast and dinner Thursday thru Sunday. New hours are Monday thru Wednesday 7 AM-3 PM, Thursday-Friday 7 AM-9 PM, Saturday 8 AM-9 PM, and Sunday 8 AM-7 PM.

The Foothill Municipal Water District -- a wholesale water supplier to many smaller local water districts -- is going to build a recycled water demonstration project in the area near Devil's Gate Dam, Hahamongna Watershed, and JPL.
Richard Atwater, the president of the water district's board, told the Altadena Town Council that Foothill plans to build a 250,000 gallon per day membrane bioreactor (MBR) in the triangle bounded by Oak Grove Drive, Berkshire Place, and the 201 Freeway. It will be close to the La Canada United Methodist Church and the ballfields at La Canada High School.
Atwater said that last winter markes the fourth driest year in California history in terms of winter rains and snowpack. The district is looking for ways to not only decrease water consumption, but to recharge aquifers.
Foothill itself has only one source of water supply: importing water from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD). According to Foothill's website, the MBR plant will produce recycled water to recharge the Raymond Groundwater Basin and "to obtain pumping credits to distribute to five of its eight member agencies."
The plant will take in stormwater, urban runoff, and sewer water, treat it, and send it to "infiltration galleries" below the high school ballfields to recharge the aquifer. The project may also send recycled water to Flint Canyon Creek. The plant is estimated to cost $2,935,300 and will be in operation by October 2016.
Currently, recycled water is used by the La Canada Flintridge Country Club and the cities of Glendale and Burbank for landscape irrigation of parks, freeways, schools, cemeteries, and golf courses, among other uses. According to Foothill, the city of Pasadena, the Verdugo Hills Golf Course, and Descanso Gardens are also planning on using recycled water.
Foohill provides water to the Las Flores Water Company, Lincoln Avenue Water Company, and the Rubio Canon Land & Water Association in Altadena, as well as water districts in La Canada Flintridge and La Crescenta.

At Tuesday night’s Town Council meeting:
Election: The councll certified the results of the June 8 town council election. The new and re-elected members will take their seats at the July meeting. Election chair Eric Pierce said that the election cost $656.90.
The council also heard numerous reports:
California Highway Patrol: Officer Kevin Denmon of the California Highway Patrol said that CHP is looking for recruits for both its explorer program and “CHP Seniors” program. Explorers should be between 15 and 21 years of age, have an interest in law enforcement, at least a 2.0 GPA, not use alcohol or drugs, display good citizenship, and have no felony convictions.
CHP Seniors volunteer for various tasks at the CHP office, and should be 55 years or older, be able to go through a background check, be able to volunteer during office hours, and work with minimal supervision. For more information on eithe program, call the Altadena CHP office at 626-296-8100.
Altadena Sheriff: Capt. John S. Benedict said that crime was down 4% from comparable statistics last year, with violent crime down 30%. The Altadena Sheriff Station also had a successful golf tournament at Brookside Golf Course last Saturday.
The next “Coffee with the Captain” event will be Wednesday, June 26 at Café Culture, 1359 N Altadena Drive, Pasadena, from 6-8 PM.
Benedict also said that the Metropolitan Baptist Church will hold a resource fair, with information on jobs and job training and community services will be held at the church, 2283 N Fair Oaks Avenue, on Saturday, June 29. The event is co-sponsored by the church and the Sheriff’s Station.

Hernandez also said that there will be a bus departing Loma Alta Park on Sunday, June 23, for the Family Music Festival at the LA County Arboretum in Arcadia. The Altadena Sheriff's Station is seeking the public's assistance in identifying a suspect wanted in a strong-armed robbery near the entrance of the Bank of America at 2345 Lake Ave., Altadena.
The suspect, described as a male Hispanic or White, 20-30 yrs, 5'05", 140 lbs, wearing a beige baseball cap, blue baggy collared shirt, dark pants, dark shoes, confronted the victim and forcefully removed a paper bag containing money that the victim was carrying.
The suspect was last seen entering the passenger side of a Gold Nissan Versa Sedan, with paper plates and leaving southbound on Lake Avenue. Anyone that may have information is encouraged to contact the Altadena Sheriff's Station at 626-798-1131.
Note: we've changed the headline -- the information we received from the sheriff department did not specify a date, but we usually get bank robbery notices the same day, so we went ahead with that assumption. Apparently this incident occurred sometime in May and is only now being made public.
