Crime blotter: some assaults, drug arrests, and guess who's back

A couple of assaults this week, and after a short absence we welcome 24 Hour Fitness back to the crime page.  Crime blotter provided by the Altadena Sheriff's Station, and all suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Sunday, June16

11:00 AM – A theft from an unlocked vehicle was reported in the 1000 block of Mount Curve Avenue. Loss: Wallet, flashlight, knife. 

5:37 PM – An assault occurred in the 200 block of W. Harriet Street. Suspects described as six male Hispanics, 18-25 years, driving a gray SUV; possibly Ford Expedition. Suspect vehicle last seen eastbound on Harriet St. 

Wednesday, June 19 

Between 12:00 AM and 9:00 AM – A vehicle vandalism occurred in the 1300 block of Terra Alta Avenue. Pasadena. The vehicle’s paint was intentionally scratched (“keyed”). 

2:30 PM – Suspect Aubrey Franklin (male/24 years old/Altadena) was arrested in the 2200 block of Casitas Avenue for felon in possession of a firearm and parole violation after detectives conducted a parole check of his residence. 

Thursday, June 20 

Between 12:00 AM and 1:00 AM – A petty theft occurred at Brake Masters, 2095 N. Lake Avenue. Loss: (1) gallon of gas. 

10:00 AM – A petty theft occurred in the 800 block of E. Sacramento Street. Loss: metal gate, sliding door, window screens. 

12:00 PM – Altadena detectives authored a search warrant and subsequently arrested Suspect Flanigan Walker (male/31 years old/Los Angeles) for burglary and Identity theft after property stolen in a local burglary was linked to him. 

9:55 PM – Suspect Eduardo Garcia (male/37 years old) was arrested at Crosby/Olive Ave. for being under the influence of drugs. Deputies contacted him after observing him walking in the middle of the street westbound on Crosby St.

Sunday, June 9 

1:30 PM – A female (17 years old) was arrested in the 2000 block of Beverly Drive for battery after she assaulted several members of her family.

12:15 AM – A residential burglary was reported in the 2800 block of Winterhaven Lane. Loss: Television set. 

Between 6:30 AM and 5:30 PM – A vandalism occurred in the 4300 block of Rising Hill Road. Damage: broken living room window. 

Between 9:00 AM and 2:30 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 300 block of E. Loma Alta Drive. Loss: television and laptop computer. 

Between 11:18 AM and 12:15 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 4200 block of Aralia Road. Loss: DVD player, Wii game console, iPad, desktop computer, television, jewelry. 

1:12 PM – Deputies arrested suspect Dwight Ferguson (male/36 years old) at Bank of America on Lake Avenue for attempting to cash a forged check. 

7:53 PM – Deputies arrested Frank Garcia (male/31 years old) in the 200 block of Acacia Street. for domestic assault. 

Tuesday, June 11 

Between 6:20 AM and 1:00 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 300 block of E. Woodbury Road. Loss: jewelry and currency. 

Between 11:00 AM and 11:35 AM – A vandalism occurred in the 700 block of Figueroa Drive. Damage: vehicle paint scratched (“keyed”). 

Between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 2300 block of N. Windsor Avenue. Loss: (2) laptop computers. 

11:25 PM – Deputies responded to a call of gunshots in the area of Stonehurst Drive. No suspects or victims found. 

Wednesday, June 12 

Between 9:30 AM and 8:00 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 2800 block of Winterhaven Lane. Loss: jewelry. 

5:58 PM – Deputies arrested suspect Lando King (male/28 years old) in the 2400 block of Grandeur Avenue for Criminal Threats after he threatened several neighbors. 

Sheriff looking for suspect in strong-arm robbery at Bank of America [corrected]

The Altadena Sheriff's Station is seeking the public's assistance in identifying a suspect wanted in a strong-armed robbery near the entrance of the Bank of America at 2345 Lake Ave., Altadena.

The suspect, described as a male Hispanic or White, 20-30 yrs, 5'05", 140 lbs, wearing a beige baseball cap, blue baggy collared shirt, dark pants, dark shoes, confronted the victim and forcefully removed a paper bag containing money that the victim was carrying.

The suspect was last seen entering the passenger side of a Gold Nissan Versa Sedan, with paper plates and leaving southbound on Lake Avenue. Anyone that may have information is encouraged to contact the Altadena Sheriff's Station at 626-798-1131.

Note: we've changed the headline -- the information we received from the sheriff department did not specify a date, but we usually get bank robbery notices the same day, so we went ahead with that assumption.  Apparently this incident occurred sometime in May and is only now being made public.

 

Sheriff warns of utility payment scam

Pico Rivera Sheriff’s Station is warning residents and businesses to be aware of a payment scam involving utility imposters demanding customers pay their energy bills with pre-paid cash cards or face immediate termination of utility service. The fraudulent activity has been reported throughout the metro-Los Angeles area. 

Several business operators in Pico Rivera have reported that individuals misrepresenting themselves as utility employees are calling and threatening to turn off electric service if payment is not made to them that day. Utility customers have been told that the payment must be made by purchasing a pre-pay cash card. 

"Although we received several calls, none of the callers reported being an actual victim of this fraudulent activity. We want to alert our residents and business operators in the area in an effort to prevent them from becoming potential victims," said Sergeant Richard Hernandez from Pico Rivera Sheriff’s Station. 

"We advise our residents and business operators to be alert and not to provide any type of financial information if they receive a call from a suspicious company." They should call their utility provider to verify the request and report the activity.”

Monday, May 27

6:00 AM – A male (46 years old) was detained by deputies in the 200 block of Taos Road after he was found trespassing at the location. Deputies determined that the individual had mental issues and transported him to Olive View Hospital for a mental evaluation and a 72-hour hold. 

7:00 AM - 6:00 PM – A residential burglary was reported in the 160 block of Altadena Drive. Loss: unknown what items were stolen at the time of report. 

8:00 PM – A residential burglary was reported in the 1400 block of New York Drive. Loss: cash and an iPad. 

9:00 PM – A female (50 years old) was arrested in the 40 block of Pine Street for domestic violence after her boyfriend reported that she had assaulted him. 

Tuesday, May 28

1:40 PM – Suspect Richard Allen (male/58) was arrested for drunk in public in the 2100 block of Lincoln Avenue. Deputies contacted the suspect in the McDonalds parking lot after noticing that he appeared intoxicated and had trouble walking. 

Wednesday, May 29 

12:15 PM – Deputies detained/arrested a male student (13 years old) for battery, at Focus Point Academy, after he punched a teacher in the head, chest, and shoulder several times. 

6:21 PM – Deputies arrested Juan Robles (male/32) on Sacramento Street for possession of a controlled substance after they conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle.

2:07 AM – Suspect Francisco Marin (male/33 years old) was arrested near Fair Oaks/Las Flores Drive for public intoxication

5:32 PM – Suspect Gregory Gates (male/20 years old) was arrested in the 2200 block of Lincoln Avenue for public intoxication after creating a disturbance at the location (“Super King”). 

Wednesday, May 15

9:00 AM – Deputies arrested a female (28 years old) in the 1700 block of Vistillas Road for domestic violence after her boyfriend alleged that he was assaulted by her. 

Between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM – A petty theft occurred in the 300 block of Ventura Street. Loss: black/green Mongoose 18 sp. bicycle.

Between 6:30 PM and 11:00 AM (Monday) – A vehicle burglary occurred in the 200 block of W. Acacia St. Loss: car stereo. 

9:32 AM – Suspect Jose Soto, (male/32 yrs.) of Pasadena was arrested in the 2300 block of Glenrose Avenue for being a felon in possession of a gun. 

12:45 PM – Suspect Ramon Hernandez (male/31 yrs.) was arrested in the 500 block of Crosby Street for violating a domestic violence restraining order. 

2:38 PM – Suspect Stanley Ludd (male/61 yrs.) was arrested in the 900 block of Lake Avenue, for possession of narcotics paraphernalia and for an outstanding warrant. 

7:21 PM – Suspect Damon Caldwell (male/47) was arrested at “RJ’s Liquor” on Woodbury Road for being drunk in public. The suspect was contacted by deputies after he was causing a disturbance at the location. 

Monday, May 6

7:13 AM – A vehicle was reported stolen from the 4100 block of Canyon Crest Road. ***Vehicle was recovered by LAPD Hollywood on 5/10/13***

A 15 year old suspect was arrested for vandalism after breaking a window in the 2900 block of El Nido Drive. (Group Home).

Between 1:00 AM and 6:00 AM – A vehicle vandalism occurred in the 300 block of Laun Street. Suspects unknown broke the vehicle’s driver’s side window. 

Between 9:45 AM and 10:50 AM – A residential burglary occurred in the 1700 block of E. Mendocino Street. Loss: checks and jewelry. ***Possible suspect(s) driving a mustard colored cargo truck*** 

Friday, May 10

Between 1:00 AM and 7:00 AM – A vandalism occurred in the 1400 block of Crest Drive. Suspects unknown bent a front gate, possibly by kicking it open. 

9:36 PM – Suspect Zachary Ward (male/22 yrs.) of Altadena was arrested for battery on a peace officer. 

Saturday, May 11

1:57 PM – Suspect Gevork Jabakchurian, 30 yrs, of Pasadena was arrested at the Bank of America, 2345 N. Lake Ave. for grand theft, burglary, and check forgery.

Monday, April 29

12:40 AM: an Altadena resident was arrested for driving under the Influence of alcohol in the area of Olive Avenue and Harriet Street. 

Altadena Detectives filed charges against a local registered sex offender who fled the state and was located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Jerome Dubose (Male/51 years old) was arrested by Ohio authorities and will be extradited back to California to face charges of Failing to Register as a Sex Offender (Upon Moving). He had been living on Santa Anita Avenue in Altadena, but left the location without notifying local authorities as required by law. Mr. Dubose has previous convictions for sexual battery and indecent exposure. 

7:20 PM:  Deputies arrested two suspects for possession for sales of marijuana and possession of concentrated cannabis. Deputies contacted the suspects, who were inside a vehicle, in the 2400 block of Grandeur Avenue. Deputies were alerted to the marijuana due to the large amount of marijuana smoke coming through the open window. Both suspects are only being identified as male/18 years old and male/21 years old, both residents of Altadena. Their names are being withheld due to the ongoing investigation. 

Tuesday, April 30

Between 7:45 PM and 9:20 PM – Two vehicle burglaries occurred at 24Hr. Fitness, 2180 N. Lincoln Avenue. Loss: black shoulder bag, purse, credit card holder. 

Between 11:00 PM and 3:30 AM (Wednesday) – A vehicle vandalism occurred in the 1500 block of Tierra Alta Drive. Three tires were slashed. 

Wednesday, May 1 

7:00 PM – In the 1100 block of Gravelia Avenue, deputies arrested a male/43 years old for domestic violence after his girlfriend was reportedly assaulted by him. 

Thursday, May 2

Between 8:00 AM and 12:30 PM – A vehicle burglary occurred at Aveson Charter School, 1919 Pinecrest Dr. Loss: laptop, case, purse, and wallet. 

6:30 PM – A street robbery occurred in the 400 block of Athens Street. Suspects described as: (#1) female, black, 22 yrs, (#2) male, black, 21-25 yrs, (#3) female, black, 22 yrs,. Suspects were driving a gray Lexus or Honda. Suspects stole the victim’s (1,500) baseball, football, and basketball cards, cellphone, and currency after getting into a physical altercation with the victim’s friend. It appears that the parties are known to each other. 

Between 10:30 PM and 9:05 AM (Friday) – A vehicle burglary occurred in the 1100 block of Gravelia Street. Loss: purse containing personal documents. 

Sheriff looking for public's help in Altadena child molestation case

The Altadena Sheriff's Station is circulating this picture of the suspected child molester.

The Altadena Sheriff's Station and Special Victim's Bureau are seeking the community's assistance in identifying an alleged child molestation suspect. 

On Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at approximately 5:15 PM, a female juvenile was walking home from school near the 2500 block of Fair Oaks Avenue, when the suspect approached her from behind, grabbed her, forced her into his vehicle, parked behind a business and molested her. 

The suspect is described as a male Hispanic, black hair, brown eyes, medium build, between 40-50 years old. 

The suspect vehicle is described as an older black 4 door Mercedes.

9:30 PM and 10:00 AM (Thursday) – A vehicle burglary occurred in the 1700 block of New York Drive. Loss: airbags, navigation system, speakers, and black tailgate. 

Thursday, April 25

4:30 PM – A vehicle burglary occurred at 24Hr. Fitness, 2180 N. Lincoln Avenue. Three male/black suspects were seen fleeing in a black colored car. Loss: purse, textbooks, wallet and make-up bag. 

A business in the 2000 block of Lake Avenue reported that three different suspects passed counterfeit money at his establishment within two hours of each other. The suspects were described as two female/black adults (50-60 years old) and one male white juvenile, driving a grey minivan. 

6:20 PM – A victim reported that two suspects approached her in the 2500 block of Fair Oaks Avenue and threatened her with a gun. The suspects are known to the victim. When responding deputies saw the possible suspect on El Nido Drive, he fled on foot and was not located at the time. 

This candy ain't dandy: Altadena deputies break up dope candy operation

Altadena detectives arrested two following a warrant search that uncovered a marijuana candy operation Friday.

Detectives from the Altadena Sheriff Station and narcotcs bureau received information that a location on the 500 block of Figueroa Drive contained drugs.  After receiving a search warrant and entering the location, officers discovered that the location also held a marijuana candy manufacturing and sales operation.

"Several pounds of marijuana was seized at the location along with a large amount of homemade 'candy' containing marijuana (suckers and chocolate bars), and equipment used in the "candy" manufacturing process," according to a sheriff's press release.

Two suspects were arrested at the location, but their names are being withheld as the investigation is continuing.

The sheriff has also released a photo of some of the 'candy' to alert parents, as the products are "typically targeted towards teens," according to the press release.

Thursday, April 4th 

A burglary and identity theft suspect was arrested (Jaime Aqualina,  female / 28 years old, resident of Pasadena) by Altadena detectives. Two search warrants were executed regarding the case and multiple items of evidence were recovered. 

Friday, April 5th 

Altadena deputies arrested an individual for possession of drug paraphernalia and being under the influence of drugs (stimulant). 

Saturday April 6th 

Altadena Deputies arrested Sergio Huezo (male / 34 years old, resident of Altadena) for being drunk in public after he was observed drinking in public and staggering on the sidewalk near Harriet Street and  Glen Avenue. 

Altadena deputies arrested an individual for domestic violence in the 2000 block of Washington Boulevard. after the suspect’s wife reported being assaulted. 

Sunday, April 7th 

A resident in the 200 block of Poppyfields Drive reported that between 03/07/13 and 04/07/13 someone stole his handgun, which was kept in a drawer at his residence. 

Between 12:00 AM and 4:30 PM – A burglary of a storage shed occurred in the 900 block of E. Mariposa Street. Loss: vintage music records. 

Monday, April 8th 

Between 7:15 AM and 10:00 AM – A residential burglary occurred in the 1200 block of E. Calaveras Street. Loss: jewelry box and centennial coins. 

8:00 AM - A resident of Altadena reported he was the victim of a telephone scam. The 80 yr. old victim received a phone call from someone who posed as his grandson. The suspect stated he needed $3,000 to post bail. The victim wired the money overseas and later discovered his grandson was not in jail. Loss: $3,000. 

Between 8:35 AM and 3:35 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 1200 block of Calaveras Street. Loss: jewelry box containing misc. jewelry.

Between 5:00 PM and 6:00 AM (Friday) – A grand theft of an unlocked vehicle occurred in the 2300 block of Marengo Avenue. Loss: handgun, Sirius Satellite radio, jacket, and briefcase.

Between 5:00 PM and 11:00 AM (Sunday) – A vehicle burglary occurred in the 2600 block of N. Raymond Avenue. Loss: gym bag, wallet, credit cards, currency. 

Boys & Girls Club issues warning about fundraising scam

The Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena issued a warning Wednesday about a fundraising scam currently targeting the nonprofit organization.

Club officials said a male individual, posing as a Club member, has been observed selling candy outside the Vons grocery store at 155 W. California Blvd. in Pasadena, across from Huntington Hospital. The person is described as a black male in his mid- to late-20s, about 5-feet, 8-inches tall, and weighing between 170- and 185-pounds.

President and CEO Rachel Estrada said she learned this person has asked store customers to purchase candy as part of a fundraising campaign for the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America during the past week. His last known unauthorized solicitation at the shopping center was Tuesday, April 9, at 4:30 p.m.

“The Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena does not have any Club members, staff, parents, or board members conducting any type of fundraising effort at this or any other site in Pasadena on behalf of our organization,” said Estrada. “Shoppers who are approached by this person are asked to report the solicitation to store or property management.”

The Club has notified the Pasadena Police Department about the scam. If approached by this individual, shoppers are advised to avoid confrontation by politely declining and walking away.

Ed. note: someone matching the description of this individual tried to do the same thing to us Monday at the Vons  on Allen Avenue and Washington Boulevard, so be alert in Altadena, too!

Altadena properties involved in wide-ranging fraud scheme

Fraudulent liens on Altadena properties were part of a wide-ranging fraud scheme that involved over 100 properties in Los Angeles County, according to the district attorney.

 

The DA filed charges against Anna Moskovyan of Van Nuys, 30, on March 21.  The 36-count indictment alleges "multiple counts of Grand Theft, and the Recording of False and Fraudulent Documents," according to a press release.

Moskovyan is charged with recording fradulent grant deeds and mechanic's liens on foreclosed properties, and fraudulently transferring real estate to herself.  Officials say the actions took place between April 2010 and June 2012. 

Mechanic's liens were recorded on properties in Altadena, Canoga Park, Canyon Country, Cerritos, Diamond Bar, Downey, Hacienda Heights, La Canada, La Mirada, La Puente, Lakewood, North Hollywood, North Hills, Northridge, Monterey Park, Valencia and Valley Village. According to the district attorney, Moskovyan would record the liens for painting work that was never done on the titles of real estate properties that were in foreclosure.  Several financial institutions paid Moskovyan to remove the fraudulent liens in order to clear the titles so the properties could be foreclosed upon and resold.

Moskovyan is currently in custody with a bail of $1.24 million. The next court date is April 16, 2013.

4:50 PM – A shoplifting incident occurred in at Rite Aid, 735 E. Altadena Drive. Suspect described as a female, white, 20-25 yrs, 5ft. 3 ins, 100 lbs., brown hair. Loss: Gillette Mach 3, iPad portable speakers, 15/5 USB charger, SHT & SHR 64MB memory stick, Maxwell 16GB USB drive, pens.

The Altadena Sheriff's Station, along with the FBI, arrested a suspect for weapons violations and detained numerous people in a warrant search Friday ... or was it Thursday?

According to the press release, the warrant was served and subsequent arrest occurred on Friday, March 29 -- however, we ran a story with substantially the same information, based on an eyewitness report and interview with the watch commander at Altadena station, that placed the incident Thursday afternoon.  Our story ran at 10:37 AM Friday -- about four and a half hours before the press release says the incident began, at about 3 PM Friday.

According to the press release, deputies from Altadena along with FBI personnel served a search warrant at the 200 block of West Harriet Street.  According to the release,

Numerous people were detained and the primary suspect was arrested for weapons violations. Inside the home evidence of narcotics use was found and the house was described as in complete disarray. Deputies described the residence as having trash piled inside and outside and cabinets and most of the interior doors were kicked in or broken.

Local residents said the home has been an issue for the neighborhood for quite some time with foot and vehicle traffic and people hanging out in the front. Detectives commented the home was obviously an issue “in an otherwise mostly pristine neighborhood. ”

According to the release, the operation was not only about crime reduction, but "working together with area residents as well as other agencies in order to improve quality of life in neighborhoods such as this one." 

The detective named in the press release was not at work when we called to ask what day the operation occurred.

ACONA speakers take it to the streets and neighborhoods

"Pay attention and call the authorities" was the message of both the speakers at the March 26 ACONA meeting at the Altadena Library.  Paul Barbe, civil engineer with the Traffic and Lighting Division of L.A. County and a team of officers from the Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol addressed residents’ concerns about street conditions and crime.

Barbe listed 14 locations throughout Altadena where residents had reported issues with speeding cars, and “calming” measures taken such as speed humps and radar signs that flash a car’s speed.  Illegal parking and other unsafe traffic conditions were discussed, such as drivers failing to stop at the sign at Wapello and Marengo.  These concerns are forwarded to the CHP.

Officer Tom Miller of the CHP said that they are working to address the issues, but an officer must see it before they can ticket, even if a resident gets the license plate number.  He has sat at the Marengo/Wapello intersection but have not caught anyone breaking the law.  He does invite those who file complaints to ride along with him.

Parking is handled by the Sheriff’s Station, but Altadena has only one parking control officer.

Suspect #1 male, black, 6’01, 200 lbs, 25-30 yrs, black ski-mask - Suspect #2 male, black, 5’10, 160 lbs., 25-30 yrs,. After robbing the location, both suspects fled the location via the rear entrance. No further info available. 

Between 11 AM Thursday, March 14th and Friday March 15: A residential burglary occurred on Pine Street. Loss: Samsung TV, DVD Player, and DirecTV Box. *** On 03/15/13 at 5:05 PM, Suspect Brenda Anderson Female/Black, resident of Pasadena, was arrested by Altadena Deputies on Harriett Street for possession of the victim's stolen property. She was booked for being under the influence of a controlled substance and possession of stolen property (Booking #3494388).

Authorities continue to search Pasadena for assailants who fired on sheriff's deputies

UPDATE 9 PM: Pasadena authorities have announced that they have completed the search for the suspects and the neighborhood is open again.

Authorities converged on a Pasadena neighborhood Thursday afternoon in search of two assailants who shot at a pair of sheriff’s deputies who were tailing them in an unmarked car.

Neither of the deputies, one of whom returned fire, were hit, but the condition of the two suspects – described as two black men with thin builds -- was not known, Pasadena police said.

The search shut down a large residential area, bordered by Maple Street to the south, Orange Grove Boulevard to the north, Hill Avenue to the east and Mentor Avenue to the west.

Police urged residents who live within the containment area to steer clear, or to head to Jefferson Elementary at 1500 E. Villa St. for regular updates should the search go beyond 5 p.m.

Altadena deputies arrest parolee in stolen car, sheriff says

Altadena deputies arrested a 33-year-old Norwalk man Tuesday who was driving a stolen vehicle, according to a press release.

The Sheriff's Department reported that Cesar Antonio Soto, a parolee, was found driving a 1995 Honda Civic that was reported stolen.  According to the press release,  a deputy noticed that the vehicle Soto was driving had an inoperable tail light.  According to the press release, "As the deputy drove toward the suspect’s vehicle, the suspect suddenly pulled over on his own. When contacted, the suspect told the deputy that he was on parole for burglary. When the deputy ran the vehicle’s license plate, the vehicle returned as stolen out of the city of Whittier. Suspect Soto was arrested without incident and booked for driving a stolen vehicle and for a violation of parole."

Soto has previous convictions for burglary, narcotics, and robbery, according to the sheriff's department.  The case will be presented to the district attorney today.

Deputies arrest resident for identity theft

Ebony Vaughns, 21, of Altadena was arrested by sheriff's detectives Wednesday morning on charges of identity theft and grand theft.

According to a release from the sheriff's department, detectives served a search warrant on the 2100 block of El Sereno Avenue.  According to the release, "A lengthy investigation led detectives to the suspect’s apartment where evidence was discovered that identified Ebony Vaughns as the person who assumed the identity of a Bogart, Georgia woman and fraudulently obtained a $5000 cash advance on her credit card. "

Vaughns is being held on $50,000 bail, and is scheduled for arraignment today.

The press release also reminded residents to look out for any unusual activity on all credit cards and bank accounts. If you see anything unusual, notify the financial institution and file a police report with your local law enforcement agency immediately.

Altadena man charged with indecent exposure to 91-year-old

A 38-year-old Altadena man was arrested and chraged with indecent exposure after unlawful entry following a Feb. 3 incident.

Dejuan Robertson of Altadena was arrested by deputies after reportedly entering the residence of a 91-year-old Altadena woman and exposing himself to her.  According to a release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the victim "reportedly was able to convince the suspect to leave the location without harming her."

Robertson was located a few blocks away and was arrested after the victim identified him.

The district attorney has charged Robertson with  one felony count of Indecent Exposure after Unlawful Entry.  According to the press release, it was filed as a second strike offense, and that Robertson has previous convictions for auto theft, burglary, battery on a police officer, and a weapons violation.

Pasadena police investigating shooting

The Pasadena Police Department just sent out an alert to drivers to avoid Maple Street from Holliston to Michigan avenues, as they are conducting a shooting investigation in the area of Chester St. and Maple Avenue.  Message was received about 4:15 PM, and it says traffic closures on Maple and Chester will be in effect for several hours, so if you're planning to go there, reroute!

Shots fired at off-duty deputy in Altadena Sat. morning

A off-duty deputy sheriff was shot at but unhurt Saturday morning while driving in his personal vehicle, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

According to a press release, at about 3:40 AM Saturday, Dec. 22,  an off-duty deputy was driving with his brother in the front passenger seat near Harriet Street and Lincoln Avenue in Altadena.

According to the release, "A dark-colored Lexus sedan pulled alongside the driver’s side of the deputy’s vehicle and a passenger from the suspect vehicle fired three rounds from a handgun at the deputy’s vehicle before speeding away. The deputy’s vehicle was struck one time. Neither occupant of the deputy’s vehicle was injured." 

Altadena deputies responded to the location and searched the surrounding area, but could not locate the suspect's vehicle.

Detectives are seeking the public’s help in identifying any other victims and/or witnesses. Double trouble in police action Tuesday

Sqauds of police cars reported by local residents Tuesday morning were part of a Los Angeles Police Department/ATF operation that ended up getting diverted to a Los Angeles bomb threat, said Altadena's police captain.

Capt. John S. Benedict told the Altadena Town Council Tuesday that the Los Angeles police and federal enforcers from Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms were serving two search warrants Tuesday morning in Altadena in a joint operation involving sales and distribution of illegal firearms.

As they were executing one warrant, a call came in about a bomb threat involving a police vehicle in the Wilshire area of Los Angeles.  (The Wilshire Boulevard Temple in the same neighborhood was also the target of a bomb threat earlier that day).   Benedict said that LAPD members left the westside scene "code 3" (with lights and sirens).  Some reports we received said that a large white vehicle that resembled a bomb squad vehicle was part of the motorcade that left Altadena.

Benedict said that it wasn't unusual to have LAPD executing warrants in Altadena.

 

Sheriffs make arrest in Pasadena for stolen property, marijuana

Deputies arrested a man in Pasadena Thursday night, discovering marijuana and multiple stolen tiems in his apartment, according to a release from the sheriff's department.

Deputies detained Christopher Calloway, 21, of Pasadena on Thursday night, December 12, on the 100 block of West Washington Boulevard in the city of Pasadena. According to the press release, a search warrant was obtained and they discovered items inside the apartment that were identified as stolen.  The items included laptop computers, a flat screen television, several handguns, collectible U.S. currency and "a large amount of marijuana."

Calloway was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property and posession of marijuna for sale.  He is being held on $20,000 bail, and is scheduled for arraignment in Pasadena Superior Court on Tuesday.

According to the press release, the arrest was made by the sheriff's Special Enforcement Bureau and Community Oriented Policing Services deputies, who are conducting saturation patrols in around Altadena.  The release says that "The Altadena Station has requested and been using additional Sheriff's Department resources to assist in crime suppression. "

Tuesday, November 27

Between 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 1100 block of New York Drive. Suspect(s) entered the residence by kicking in the front door and shattering the front window. Loss: platinum wedding band, gold wedding band. 

Between 9:30 AM and 4:30 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 2000 block of Midlothian Drive. Suspect(s) entered the residence via the unlocked front door. Residence ransacked. Loss: gray Casio camera, large bag containing costume jewelry. 

Between 11:00 AM and 5:45 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 1900 block of Braeburn Road. Suspect(s) entered the residence by shattering the rear bathroom window. Residence ransacked. Loss: (2) large glass jars w/currency, shoebox containing silver foreign coins. 

Between 8:00 PM and 10:55 AM (Wednesday) – A residential burglary occurred in the 2500 block of N. El Sol Avenue. Suspect(s) entered the residence via unknown means. The victim believes a prior tenant may be the suspect. Loss: CD’s. 

Update: detectives looking for leads in Thursday morning shooting

More details have come out as Altadena detectives seek information about a shooting this morning at West Harriet Street and Casitas Avenue.

The victim -- a 25-year-old Altadena resident who was not hit -- led deputies to the site where he said a small SUV-type vehicle opened fire on him as he was driving his car.

According to an alert issued by the Altadena Sheriff Station, deputies responded to the area of Harriet St. and Lincoln Avenue this morning on a call of shots fired.  (The Altadena watch commander said the call came in just before 9 AM).  The victim led deputies to the intersection of Casitas Avenue and Harriet Street, where deputies found unspecified evidence that a shooting had occurred.

According to the press release, while the victim was unhurt, his car had been struck numerous times by gunfire.

The Altadena Sheriff Station is seeking information from anybody who may have witnessed the shooting.  Please call Altadena Station detectives at 626-798-1131.

A neighbor from the President Streets area sent us a message that poinsettias are disappearing from front porches:

A neighbor just came to my door and told me about the four poinsettia plants that came up missing from her porch this morning. At that point, I realized that three had been removed from my porch as well. 

Something else to be wary of, in addition to watching out for holiday package thefts.

 

Two men shot in separate incidents Friday

Two men were shot in separate incidents in west Altadena and in Pasadena near the border on Friday.

Lt. Brian Fitch of the L.A. County Sheriff reported that Altadena deputies responded to a "shots fired" call at the 400 block of west Woodbury Road on Nov. 30, at about 11:30 PM.  Deputies were unable to locate the source of the shots after canvassing the area.

However, about 20 minutes later, deputies answered a call of a male gunsot victim sitting in a parked vehicle along the 500 block of East Alameda Street.  According to a release from the Altadena Sheriff Station, the victim had been shot once in the right side and once in the right hip, and there were several bullet holes on the passenger side of his vehicle.  The victim was treated by paramedics and taken by ambulance to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

The victim said he had been driving on Woodbury Road when he was shot by unknown persons driving an unknown type of vehicle, and was unable to provide a description of his assailants.  Deputies were unable to come up with any more information, evidence, or witnesses after canvassing the area.

Earlier in the day, according to a story in the Pasadena Star-News, another man was found by Pasadena police about 12:30 AM at a bus stop at Lincoln Avenue and Montana Street.  The report said the victim had a grazing gunshot wound to the face and would not cooperate with authorities.

Altadena sheriff's station offers tips for "Cyber Monday"

One of the biggest online shopping days of the year is “Cyber Monday”. Cyber Monday is a marketing term for the Monday following Black Friday, created by companies to encourage people to shop online. Shopping online is an extremely convenient way to purchase your holiday gifts and the Altadena Sheriff’s Station wants you to remember safety tips while shopping online: 

• Shop at secure websites. When paying, make sure the website address begins with https (the “s” at the end means it’s secure). It also means the website encrypts the information it sends. 
• Packages that sit on a porch or door step are more likely to be stolen. There have been cases where thieves will drive behind a delivery truck and wait for the driver to leave the package on the porch or doorstep and then steal the package. 
• If possible, send the package to a relative or neighbor that is home during the day and is expecting the package. 
• Always try to request signature confirmation on deliveries. This will ensure that the delivery person won’t leave the package unattended. 
• Send packages to your work rather than your home. This will ensure that you receive the package or someone will sign for it if you are not available. 
• If you prefer to shop in the store, remember the holidays are a busy time of year and everyone has a lot on their mind. Criminals are looking to take advantage of you while you are at your busiest. 
• Remember these tips when you’re out shopping for your holiday gifts: 
• A woman should hold her purse close to her body, with the opening facing toward her. When walking with another person, the purse should be held between the two. 
• Stow your purchases in the trunk of your vehicle. You may be tempted to throw your purchases in the back seat of your vehicle and return to continue shopping. If your purchases are in plain view, you may return to find your car windows smashed and your presents stolen. 
• Save your most expensive purchases for last, so you can head straight home. 
• Never leave your purchases unattended, even for a few minutes.

Sheriff looking for public's help in Thanksgiving shooting

The Altadena Sheriff's Station has put out a public appeal for help on Thursday afternoon's drive-by shooting of two men on west Altadena Drive.

According to a press release, the station is asking the public for any information regarding the shooter's vehicle, described as a full-size van with Oregon license plates, occupied by two black male adults.

Two wounded in drive-by shooting Thursday

Sheriffs are looking for two suspects in a Thursday afternoon drive-by shooting that left two wounded.

A sheriff's spokesman said that a black full-size van with Oregon plates drove up to a house at the 150 block of West Aldadena Drive at about 3:20 PM Thursday.  According to the spokesman, no words were exchanged, but the suspects in the vehicle -- described as two African American males -- fired at the two male victims and sped away westbound on Altadena Drive.

Both victims were treated at the scene.  One victim was released at the scene, and the other was taken to Huntington Hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery, the spokesman said.

Always 
• Remain aware of your surroundings, at home, in parking lots, in your driveway, in stores, everywhere you go. 
• Keep records of your credit/debit card numbers and phone numbers in a safe place in case you need to report a stolen or lost card. 

Shopping Safety 
• When shopping, take only what you need--identification and the credit card or debit card you intend to use. 
• Don’t carry large amounts of cash; carry only the amount you need. 
• Stay alert! Be aware. Pay attention to activity around you.  Busy and distracted shoppers are a target for any criminal looking for an easy opportunity. 
• Park in well lighted areas. 
• Lock your vehicle. 
• Do not leave your purse or any other valuables in a shopping cart unattended. 
• Do not leave items in plain view. 
“Window shopping” thieves will break vehicle windows to get your valuables.
• Do not carry a purse or wallet that has long straps that dangle. 
• Carry your purse/wallet close and tight to your body. 
• Put a wallet in an inside pocket of your jacket or front pants pocket. 
• Have your car keys in hand and ready to use when you reach your vehicle. 
• When you arrive home from a shopping trip, have your keys ready to use when you approach the door.  Don’t be digging in your purse or shuffling packages to get to your keys. 

Two juveniles detained in Altadena burglary

Officers of the Pasadena Police Department arrested two 17-year-olds at John Muir High School Tuesday afternoon when the youths were found with items linked to an Altadena burglary.

According to the Altadena Sheriff's Station, officers were investigating a report of marijuana possession on or near the campus of John Muir High School.  During the course of the investigation, officers discovered the suspects in possession of an iPad and iPhone, along with women's jewelry.  It was discovered that the items had come from a residence on the 3200 block of Thurin Avenue in Altadena, which had not yet reported a burglary.

The 59-year-old victim was contacted, and confirmed that her home had been burglarized.  She was transported to the school where she identified the stolen items and the two suspects, whom she'd seen loitering around her home before the burglary occured.

Both suspects were taken into custody by Altadena deputies and were booked for residential burglary.  They were eventually released to famly members, according to the sheriff's station.  Both are scheduled to be arraigned in January.

 

 

Update: two booked in Wednesday's neighborhood lockdown

Eddie Vasquez, 32, and Nancy Carillo, 22, both of Altadena, were arrested Wednesday afternoon.

More details have come to light in the auto theft/burglary that locked down a west side neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.

 

Eddie Vasquez, 32, and Nancy Carillo, 22, both of Altadena, were taken into custody by deputies with the help of  a K9 unit.  Vasquez was arrested for grand theft auto and possession of stolen property, while Carillo was arrested for possession of methamphetimine.

According to a press release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, deputies attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle on the 400 block of west Mendocino Street.  The vehicle, a 2006 Toyota Camry, had been reported stolen from Pasadena.

Vasquez ran out of the vehicle northbound through yards and out of sight, while Carillo was left behind in the car, the release says.  She was taken into custody while a permeter was set using sheriffs deputies from Altadena and surrounding stations, as well as a helicopter and K9 units.

According to the sheriff's department, Vasquez was found hiding under a house in the neighborhood. The department says that "the stolen car was loaded with numerous items that appeared to be stolen."

Vasquez is being held in lieu of $35,000 bail.  Carillo is being held in lieu of $10,000 bail.  Both are scheduled to appear in Pasadena Superior Court today.
