from the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District
The San Gabriel Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District confirmed that a dead bird identified by a District vector ecologist was infected with West Nile virus (WNv). The bird was collected in central Arcadia southeast of Santa Anita Avenue and Duarte Road. This is the first confirmation this year that WNv is being transmitted actively in the District.
Birds are natural hosts for WNv and are routinely monitored to indicate whether the virus is active in the San Gabriel Valley. Mosquitoes transmit WNv from one bird to another when they bite to obtain a blood-meal necessary for egg development. Because WNv is fatal to many common urban species, dead birds serve as an early warning that virus is being transmitted. People can become infected with WNv if they are bitten by an infected mosquito.
District officials hope this information motivates residents to take the necessary precautions against mosquito bites and remove source of standing water sources around their homes.
Proactive monitoring, early season mosquito control, and public education are critical to reduce disease transmission. Throughout the summer, basic protective measures should be followed:
The District encourages the public to help identify WNV "hot spots":
Report dead birds and squirrels to the WNV Hotline at (877) WNV-BIRD (877-968-2473) orwww.westnile.ca.gov. Report mosquito problems to (626) 814-9466 orwww.sgvmosquito.org.

The Altadena Town Council election is this Saturday, and election chair Eric Pierce says they're still looking for help:
We're still looking for volunteers to help staff the Altadena Town Council elections this Saturday! We're up to 75% staffing, which is much better than where we were two days ago, but we still need more folks to spend a couple of hours helping out. Everything you need to sign up is at AltadenaElection.org Polling locations, sign-up sheet. Even a volunteer orientation video!
Right now, we're looking at curtailing the hours of a few polling sites, and probably cancelling one site entirely. Please don't let that happen! We have locations right in your neighborhood, so come out for two hours and have some fun meeting your neighbors and helping out our community!

The California Shakespeare Ensemble returns to the Farnsworth Park Amphitheater in a performance of "Shakespeare's LOVERS" on Sunday, June 16, at 7:30 PM.
The talented performers create a fast-paced (70 min.) show of some of the best love scenes from the Bard's work. (While there is no vulgarity, it does get earthy, as Shakespeare is wont to do, so it's for mature audiences).
Bring a picnic or snacks and enjoy an evening of theater in the outdoors. Suggested donation is $10 at the door. but none will be turned away for lack of funds.

The Altadena Election's Facebook page posted a message Wednesday afternoon signed Dale Parks, who was one of three candidates for the seat at CT 4611.
The message reads:
Due to the recent death of my father and ensuing family matters I feel I will not be able to focus on my candidacy for the Altadena Council. I have decided to withdraw from the race because at his time I will not be able to contribute the time and energy the position deserves. I wish the other candidates the best of luck.

from the Women's City Club
The Women's City Club of Pasadena is looking for nominees for the Gloria Gartz Award. Past honorees include internationally-known executive coach, best-selling author and keynote speaker Dr. Lois Frankel, and last year’s recipient, Christina Regalado, Vice President of Programs with the California Wellness Foundation.
Nominees should be women living locally who have demonstrated innovation, are visionary, generous, have a nurturing spirit, have shown respect for diversity, empower women and the community, and have noteworthy achievements. It is simple to nominate. Go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/N7XRG8Z Nominees may be contacted as the selection committee may request a resume or C.V. All nominations must be in by June 6, 2013. A winner will be selected by June 15. The Gloria Gartz Award Dinner will be held on July 27, 2013.
Who was Gloria Gartz? She was a visionary woman who founded the Women’s City Club of Pasadena 68 years ago. Ms. Gartz, in a time when there was no internet, no email, and no texting, was able to bring together hundreds of women to create a place for women to support each other in their personal, community, businesses, civic, and charitable efforts. Gloria Gartz proved herself to be a catalyst of community contributions in Southern California, in particular in the Pasadena community. Ms. Gartz, was an Altadena native, daughter to A.F. Gartz, a plumbing magnate from Chicago, and Kate Crane-Gartz, a Chicago steel heiress. Ms. Gartz was a strong supporter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Planned Parenthood, and Huntington Library. She assisted Dr. Andrus by providing funding for the founding of Grey Gables of Ojai which later led Dr. Andrus to found AARP.
Why is the WCC so important to women and the community at large? Gloria Gartz, by creating the WCC, facilitated women to mold the community we live in now. The club has been home to numerous non-profit organizations such as the League of Women Voters, one of the earliest non-profit members of the club in 1945. On the 93rd anniversary of Women’s Suffrage, it continues to be a member today. The home has also been instrumental for other non-profits, such as the American Association of University Women, Civitan, Zonta, First District PTA, Women's Civic League of Pasadena, and the council of Women's Clubs to change history and better the lives of our community members. The club and its home, the historic Blinn House, are now an integral part of Pasadena’s history.

Shakespeare by the Sea (SBTS) will present its 16th season this summer, featuring professionally-crafted works of William Shakespeare in 21 parks around Southern California. This year, the company's visit to Farnsworth Park will perform a play never before offered in the San Pedro troupe's history: "King John," a larger-than-life drama about contention for raw power in medieval Europe.
A rarely performed play, this is a “Game of Thrones” set in the days of the Plantagenet dynasty. Competing interests posture and strategize to build and ruin alliances through persuasion and deception for king and country – all in the context of the battle for a certain fortified city in France. Shakespeare’s text makes this historic contention spring to life with inspired characters and dialog, if not historical accuracy. “King John is a real character from history, but the play is a fictitious story. It’s an interesting juxtaposition of many characters from the Medieval period, not all of whom lived at the same time,” notes Stephanie Coltrin, who directs the play. “Shakespeare puts together the elements of compelling drama with the extraordinary imagery and humanity that he is known for, sometimes at the expense of the history lesson.” Stephanie will also record her experience directing KING JOHN in a blog posted on the SBTS web site.
Founded in 1998, and funded entirely by donations and grants, Shakespeare by the Sea brings contemporary and classic works to underserved, culturally diverse audiences in order to ignite imagination, promote literacy and encourage artistic expression. This season’s performances are made possible through the support of Associate Sponsors Target and PBS SoCaL who is generously partnering with SBTS to promote the season in conjunction with their Shakespeare Uncovered National Community Outreach initiative. Additional support is provided by the Orange County Community Foundation, Union Pacific Railroad, KPCC 89.3 FM, Pacific Life Foundation, Supervisor Don Knabe, and The Los Angeles County Arts Commission. The San Pedro performances are made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs. More sponsors will be needed to complete the funding to produce this season’s offerings.
The troupe will also be performing "King John" and "All's Well that Ends Well" in Glendale and South Pasadena. Tour location details and dates are available at www.shakespearebythesea.org/locations. "King John" will be performed at the Farnsworth Park Amphitheater on Friday, July 5, at 8 PM. Admission is free.

The Pasadena Unified District Board of Education appointed MIkala Rahn to fill the board's vacant seat at a special board meeting held Saturday at Pasadena City College.
Rahn is the founder/CEO of Learning Works, a charter school that targets teen mothers, youths on probation, and dropouts. She is also executive director of Community Works Learning Center, which provides tutoring and other enrichment services to parents and children, and of Public Works, a non-profit educational consulting firm.
“I would like to welcome Mikala Rahn to the PUSD board to serve the students of the district,” said PUSD Board President Renatta Cooper in a statement from the school district. “All of the candidates that appeared before the board were impressive in their background, diversity and genuine desire to improve public education for the children of Pasadena, Altadena and Sierra Madre.”
Rahn, a Sierra Madre resident, will represent District 4 on the board. That seat was vacated when board member Kim Kenne of Altadena won election to new geographic subdistrict Seat 5 in March and had to vacate her at-large Seat 4.
A total fo 38 people applied to fill the vacant seat. Nine were selected at the May 28 board meeting for final interviews.

Do you have a hankering for crab cakes? Umm, umm. Sausages? Pulled pork? Getting hungry? How about some tacos, burritos, or chile verde? And, to top if off, a few pecan pralines, a vegan cookie or two and pie?
Or maybe you would prefer a delicious salad and sandwich. Or some luscious Persian and Indian food like chicken tikka masala, rice-aloo chat, dahl, and lassi. Or something lighter like a bagel or donut with coffee or special herb tea?
Usually you won’t find these delectables in one place since they come from different eateries. However, you can enjoy all of these wonders by showing up at Altadena Library’s Art on Millionaire’s Row Art Fair and salon on Saturday, June 8 anytime from 10 AM to 6 PM to have your fill. Really, you can eat all of these in one day if you stay long enough. And you probably will want to because there’s a lot going on. Besides munching, there will be beautiful arts and crafts and live music from 12 individuals and musical groups including jazz, pop, rock, folk, guitar, singers, and even some classical and Hawaiian dancing too. Webster's Fine Stationers is hosting Carol Woodliff, author of "From Scared to Sacred: Lessons in Learning to Dance with Life" on Thursday, June 6, starting at 6 PM.
What would you do if a spirit voice asked you to sit for an hour a day and take down its messages? Would you question your sanity? Would you write?
Author Carol Woodliff shares beautiful poetic lessons from that spirit voice and honest personal essays reflecting on living that wisdom.
It is a journey that is funny, touching, mystical, and grounded in the question, "How do we live those spirit teachings and be compassionate with our human self at the same time?" Carol invites you to join her in this exploration and listen to the whispers within your own heart. Join us as Carol explains the answers she was given when she threw up her hands and asked the Universe "WHAT do you want me to do?". Light refreshments will be served.
Webster's Fine Stationers is at 2450 N. Lake Avenue.

Neighbors Building a Better Altadena held a forum for the 14 candidates for Altadena Town Council on May 29. The format was unusual; each candidate who attended made a general statement, and answered questions formulated by the audience, which had broken into small groups divided by census tract. The candidates then joined the small group that represented their tract for more direct discussions and questioning.
While there were no earthshaking revelations (except that Damon Hobdy, one of three candidates for CT 4603.01, supports incorporating Altadena into a city), the large candidate pool -- and the 60-some members of the audience -- held lively discussions
Before the event, NBBA submitted a questionnaire to all the candidates about where they stood on Altadena issues. The answers are available at their website.

Danny's Farm, the formerly-in-Altadena organization that provides educational programs and employment for persons with autism and other developmental disabilities, received $500 from May's Fancy Food Truck Friday event.
Webster's Community Pharmacy, Webster's Wine & Spirits, and the participating food trucks raised the money from proceeds of the monthly event. Danny's Farm is the sponsor of the fancy food truck event.
According to Cathy Gott, the contribution was welcome as Danny's Farm is expanding its mission, as children with autism become adults with autism and will need to find meaningful employment as they age out of school and other services.
