A celebration of the 75th anniversary of the League of Women Voters Pasadena Area will be held March 6, 4- 6 PM at the Caltech Athenaeum, with music, food and drink and brief remarks by Congresswoman Judy Chu and Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard. Admission is $75 and requires advance reservations available online at www.lwvpasadenaarea.org/celebrate or by calling 626-798-0965.
Women in California won the right to vote 100 years ago – before the rest of the nation got on board. Civic-minded women in Pasadena banded together 25 years later to form a League of Women Voters chapter – just 16 years after the 19th amendment passed. After these seven-and-a-half decades, the mission remains the same: To promote political responsibility through informed and active participation of citizens in government.
Only the faces have changed since 100 women gathered in the living room of a San Marino home in February 1936 to launch the Pasadena League.
And Altadena women have always been well-represented: Monica Hubbard, chair of the anniversary committee, founded the women’s choral music program at Caltech and is editor of “Altadena Women’s Network” and “Wired Women,” popular local email newsletters; she is known as a community leader with connections in hosts of local non-profit groups. Altadena residents Dolores Hickambottom, Emiliy Hausman, Debbie Heap, and Marge Nichols are also on the planning committee. The League also instrumental in organizing the Altadena Town Council.
Membership in the League is open to eligible voters (men and women), with special memberships available to people under 18 years of age or non-citizens. For further information, call 626-798-0965.
Advance reservations are required for the event and can be made online at www.lwvpasadenaarea.org/celebrate.

Nancy Steele, president of the Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy, announced some good news in a Friday night email:
In mid-December, we told you that the Eaton Canyon Nature Center Associates had made two $10,000 grants to the Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy. One was outright and the other was contingent on our raising another $10,000 in gifts and pledges.
Well, you matched the grant with donations and surpassed it with Foothills Society pledges. This is great news, and it puts us that much closer to preserving the foothills.

About 75 people turned out for a community meeting at Robinson Park on Feb. 17 called by the Pasadena Police Department to address three recent non-fatal shootings in Pasadena and the murder of Brandon Jackson, the teenager killed in Altadena in a drive-by last Saturday night.
Pictured: Sheri Costley and Cyntha Brown
Jackson’s aunts, Sheri Costley and Cynthia Brown, spoke eloquently about their nephew and the losses in their family.
Jackson, a junior at John Muir High School, was shot on the 300 block of W. Palm St. on Feb. 12 at about 10:40 p.m. He had just left a party in the neighborhood when a car pulled up and called him over. He went, and someone in the car opened fire. Friends transported Jackson to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Pasadena Police Cmdr. John Perez, who led the meeting, Pasadena Police Chief Phillip Sanchez, and other PPD officers took the lion’s share of the time, but most of the questions were regarding the Jackson shooting. At one point, a man named Carlos asked, “Can we hear from the Altadena Sheriff’s Department?”
PIctured: Pasadena Police Chief Phillip L. Sanchez
Perhaps the most arresting moment of the meeting was when a woman stood up and said, “My name is Cynthia Brown, and Brandon was my nephew.” Brandon had been on his way to her house when he was shot.
“Every day, Brandon would get up and say, ‘Good morning, God,’” Brown said. She told of his being promoted from middle school with a 4.0 average, and how his life became a constant struggle since his mother passed away in 2007. “He was still struggling with that, among other issues,” she said.
Brown addressed Muir principal Sheryl Orange’s comments in the Pasadena Star-News on Thursday, in which Orange said Jackson “had so much turmoil on the inside” and that he was trying to decide whether or not to join a gang. In the article, Orange also affirmed that Jackson was turning his life around and raising his grades.

Sometimes, Mom or Dad have to be away from the kids -- business travel, family care, military service, lots of reasons. Wouldn’t it be great for little kids to still have a connection to their parents -- maybe the same kind of connection they have to a favorite stuffed animal?
Enter the Parent Doll, the brainchild of Altadena inventor and toymaker Brian Gibson. The Parent Doll is exactly that -- a squeezable doll with the parent’s face, that can speak up to four different messages in the parent’s own voice.
“A few years ago my childhood friend came up with this idea and wanted to know if he could do in in DVD -- I have a film background,” Gibson said. The idea was a DVD with the parent’s face and voice that could teach and talk to the young child.
But then the idea came: let’s do it on dolls.
The Parent Doll idea is rather simple: a male or female doll with a transparent plastic pocket over the face, so a picture of the parent can be inserted. The doll also has a recording device built in and switches in the hands and feet, so parents can record up to four different messages in their own voice. The doll can handle up to eight minutes of messages.
Pictured: Brian GIbson
“I knew it’s something doable, and it’s tangible, and kids love toys,” Gibson said. “And who better to learn from than Mom and Dad, rather than Dora the Explorer or Sponge Bob?
The doll can leave personal messages, recite the ABCs, or even a favorite bedtime story -- whatever the parents can imagine.

A rainwater harvesting workshop sponsored by Foothill Municipal Water District, Glendale Water and Power, Pasadena Water and Power and Burbank Water and Power, will be held on Sat., March 12. Participants will learn principles, practices and tips for water-harvesting earthworks and rain gardens.
The workshop will be taught by inspiring speaker Brad Lancaster. Brad Lancaster harvests rainwater, grey water and storm water to create water abundance instead of water scarcity. His fifteen plus years of experience in permaculture consulting, design and education has focused on integrated and sustainable approaches to landscape design, planning and living. He also created the website www.HarvestingRainwater.com.
“Rain gardens conserve water, replenish groundwater supplies and create sustainable oases around homes,” said Nina Jazmadarian, General Manager of FMWD.
The event will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Salvation Army Pasadena Tabernacle, 960 E. Walnut St., Pasadena, CA 91106. Registration is required to attend. Participants can register at www.PasadenaSavesWater.com.
“Living in a semi-arid climate, it is important to find a way to capture rainwater and put it to good use. Rain gardens quickly infiltrate rainfall into the soil where less is lost to evaporation,” said Nancy Long, Water Conservation Manager for Pasadena Water & Power.
Rain barrel examples will be displayed at the event. Raffle prizes include two rain barrels as well as for four sets of books published by Brad Lancaster: Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond Volume 1: Guiding Principals to Welcome Rain Into Your Life and Landscape and Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond Volume 2: Water-Harvesting Earthworks. Product exhibitors will also be present, some offering discounts to consumers.
For questions about the event, please contact Jennifer Hao at jhao@cityofpasadena.net or (626) 744-7926.

4:25 PM: Thanks to readers who alerted us (we're in the field now, but we have wireless and a mobile scanner) unconfirmed reports of an aircraft down around the Cobb Estate. Fire and Air 5 seems to be rolling. We'll keep monitoring.
4:26 PM: Please remember scanner transmissions are raw information and subject to revision or just plain being wrong -- but Battalion 4 (which services Altadena) is waiting for confirmation that an aircraft is down -- can't see it from their location.
4:34 PM: Have named it the Lake Incident, units responding to Lake & Loma Alta ... LA air control says everything's up in the air that should be, so they're canceling units altho' Air 5 (sheriff chopper) is on scene and looking.
4:35 PM: This is looking more like a washout -- local units are remaining on scene at Lake & Loma Alta, reinforcements are being canceled.
4:43 PM: Fire dispatch reports that no reports of any planes down, anywhere. Checking local general aviation airports.
6:10 PM: Altadena Mountain Rescue Team says they are coming down the mountain, apparently nothing found.

The 29th annual Black History Parade and Festival will be this Sat., Feb. 19, starting with a parade originating in Charles White Park and ending with a festival at Robinson Park in Pasadena.
Jarvis Emerson of the City of Pasadena said that the parade is scheduled to start at 10 AM, at Charles White, and will move south along Fair Oaks to the festival site at Robinson Park on Washington in Pasadena.
Celebrity grand marshalls will be newscaster Michaela Pereira and Manuel Galloway, whose experiences with an all-black white-collar biker club were the basis of the film “Biker Boyz.” Galloway is currently an employee of the city of Pasadena.
Emerson said that the parade and festival, which is co-sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank and Miller Coors Brewing, will also honor 14 “unsing heroes and heroines.” “We have a large group that is participating,” Emerson said, including the mayor and council members from Pasadena, the Altadena sheriff’s station, and a host of drill teams and high school bands and other notables.
The festival at Robinson Park goes from noon to 4 PM and will feature music and food, and will be held indoors at the park’s gym due to rain, Emerson said.

Al Evans of the LA County Dept. of Parks and Recreation told the Altadena Town Council Tuesday night that a farmer’s market at Loma Alta Park could start as early as April, although many details have yet to be worked out.
Evans said that the county was still taking applications from farmer’s market managers, although two so far are very interested in taking it on. What has yet to be determined is the day, with the market likely to take place on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.
Even though Loma Alta Park is busy on weekends, with sports and Community Garden activities, the market shouldn’t interfere, Evans said.
Once a manager and a day is chosen, the county will be taking suggestions from the community on what they would like to see in the market, such as breads, flowers, or other items so the manager can identify vendors and bring them to the market.

The spectre of the murder of Brandon Jackson hung over a busy Altadena Town Council meeting Tuesday night, cropping up in several places.
Altadena Sheriff Capt. Steven McLean said that the killing of Jackson on Saturday night was the first homicide in two years in Altadena. The latest information, McLean said, is that deputies believed he was walking home from a party at around 10 PM and at some point a red vehicle drove up to him. McLean said that Jackson apparently talked to someone in the vehicle, and that someone in the vehicle shot and killed him.
McLean said that there were two shootings in Pasadena the next day that may or may not be related. He was working with Pasadena Police Chief Phillip Sanchez to see if the shootings are linked, and to tackle the problem of gang violence.
McLean said, “What I want the community to know is that we are dedicated to tracking and finding Brandon’s killer.” McLean said that “my detectives have been working night and day since the very second we heard about it.”
Later in the evening, Penny Daniels, manager at Loma Alta Park, said that Jackson was a member of the Teen Club, and was there playing baseball Friday night.
Members of the councll mentioned that there seem to be more young men hanging out at night at Loma Alta and Farnsworth Parks, and McLean said that the sheriffs were aware and ‘we have plans in place.”
Det. Lt. Joe Dempsey, the sheriff station’s public information officer, said that the station was partnering with the city of Pasadena and reallocating resources to the parks and streets, and also working with the county parks bureau, which patrols the parks. “We’re not going to let any parks be taken over by gangs.”
The sheriffs said that if anyone can help with the investigation to call the Altadena station (798-1131) or call 800-222-TIPS (8477), or go online: www.lacrimestoppers.org

Pasadena Water and Power (PWP) -- which also supplies some neighborhoods in Altadena -- and the California Dept. of Public Health (CDPH) will hold a public hearing in Altadena next week to help determine if it can bring the Monk Hill water treatment plant online, to add its water to the domestic water supply.
The Monk Hill plant was built to clean up pollutants, particularly perchlorate and carbon tetrachloride (CTC), from four wells that were contaminated by underground plumes of water from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The public hearing -- part of the approval process -- will be Thurs., Feb. 24, at the Altadena Community Center, 730 E. Altadena Dr., from 7-9 PM. The public comment period, where written comments will be accepted, will be open through March 13. If approved by the PWP and CDPH, the plant could be running later in March.
Pictured: the Monk Hill Treatment System under construction. Photo courtesy NASA.
Perchlorate and its salts are used in solid propellant for rockets, missles, and fireworks. According to the CDPH, if released into the environment, perchlorate has been found to interfere with iodide uptake by the thyroid gland, which can decrease the production of thyroid hormones needed for prenatal and postnatal growth and development. It can also affect normal metabolism and mental function in adults. CTC, a volatile organic compound found in the discharge from chemical plants and industrial activities, has been linked to liver problems and cancer.

Brandon Jackson, the teen who was the apparent victim of a drive-by shooting in Altadena Saturday night, was "an awesome kid ... he motivated kids his own age, he motivated even adults. He was one of those kids who wanted to see people do well."
That's the opinion of Astonn Penman, lead program coordinator for Mentoring and Partnership for Youth Development (MPYD) at John Muir High school, a mentoring program for young men. Jackson was one of Penman's own mentees, and said the young man overcame a lot of difficulties to blossom into leadership.
"This kid ... closed out ninth grade with a 1.88 GPA, and this past semester he had a 3.2," Penman said. "This kid was an awesome football player. He had one of the biggest personalities on campus -- he talked to kids, adults, security guards, everybody."
Penman said that Jackson was overcoming a bad family situation -- his mother died of cancer, and his family life was abnormal and difficult. Penman said that Jackson was also close friends with Jerrill Dulaney, the teen whose May 9, 2009 Altadena murder remains unsolved.

Authorities still haven't released the name of the victim in Saturday night's shooting on W. Palm St., which is now being investigated by sheriff's detectives.
Updated information says that the victim was a 17-year-old Muir High School student who was on the football team, and a participant in the Mentoring and Partnership for Youth Development program on the Muir campus. Tecumseh Shackelford, one of the MPYD mentors, told Altadenablog this morning via phone that he was on the Muir campus meeting students about the situation.
UPDATE: The victim has been identified as Brandon Jackson, 18, a junior at Muir High School and fullback on the football team.
Via Frank Girardot of PSN's Crime Scene blog, here's Brandon's memorial Facebook page.

More sightings: a bobcat was spotted last week at Skywood Circle on Holliston, probably eyeing the local cats.
And a coyote was spotted on Mar Vista, heading toward Sonoma last week (we now have a coyote graphic, so we can start logging those sightings, too!)

Per the scanner (and thus unconfirmed), there were reports of gunfire around Glen and Pepper, and deputies are looking for shell casings. Called the watch commander around 8 PM, and he says they're still trying to pin down anything solid. We'll continue to monitor the situation.

Four fancy food trucks made the parking lot of the Webster's complex the place to be Friday night in the first of what promises to be a monthly event. The chance to see friends and indulge in some wine from Oddball Grape made the long lines a little easier to take. Webster's Fine Stationers, Community Pharmacy, and Liquors hosted the event, and the pharmacy's Meredith Miller told us that it was such a hit we can expect more next month (and maybe more food trucks, too!)

Another missing dog, this time around Alzada. Susan writes:
MiniMe has still not returned. She is a miniature pincher but is unique and doesn’t fit the min-pin mold. She is old but tuff; has only one good eye and no tail. If you see her please give me a shout – 626.222.5072 or Trista at 626.419.7045. Here’s a picture of her on her boogie board.
